“Towards sustainable rural livelihoods.”

The organization that I did my practice experience with was the Center for the Environment and Community Assets Development (CECAD).

Under the direct conduct and supervision of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), CECAD operates and follows the Regulations and Instructions of the Union, as well as the current Legislation of the State. Moreover, the Center has legal status, seal, separate accounts at national banks and independent accounting.

CECAD has a desire to become an influential, non-governmental organisation within Vietnam. They wish to research the environment and communities in order to: preserve biodiversity, help implement changes in response to climate change, improve living conditions, reduce social imbalance and assist in the development of communities. They work primarily with poor, disadvantaged and vulnerable communities as well as ethnic minorities. This is in remote, ecological areas in need of protection that are being or likely to be exploited.

With the slogan Towards sustainable rural livelihoods”, CECAD will work as a mediator, aiming to introduce connections between organisations, scientists and experts in order to conduct research and initiate projects for the sustainable development of communities based upon community resources. The general aims are to reduce poverty and to ensure continuous development, particularly in remote areas where ethnic minorities reside.

CECAD undertakes research in order to develop and implement projects that will aid environmental protection and community development with the target of reducing poverty.  CECAD provides technical assistance and training, implements education initiatives, develops community networks and coordinates organisations both in and out of Vietnam. Projects undertaken address the following objectives:
  • Support officials and residents in improving their skills in analysing needs, planning, monitoring and evaluating local agendas and in conflict management.
  • Provide a consultancy service and technical support to implement legislation in the field of environmental protection and community development, with the aim of managing local resources effectively and sustainably.
  • Increase participation in the management, protection, development and rational use of local resources with an aim of protecting the environment.
  • Coordinate with other relevant organisations to arrange higher education and to launch propaganda programs and campaigns on rural development and environmental protection. This is in order to create knowledgeable staff who are experienced in sustainable resource management.
  • Obtain funding from national and international organisations.
  • Individuals to carry out further research.
  • Expand international relations with the intention of sharing and exchanging information and skills in environmental protection and community development, with worldwide and regional organisations.
  • Edit, publish and print research and development project reports to further educate, train and raise awareness to the residents.
